How Long Does a Yacht Teak Deck Last?
Few questions come up more often at the start of a refit than this one — and few have a more misleading short answer. A solid teak deck can last anywhere from ten to forty years. That range is so wide it is almost useless until you understand what moves a deck from one end of it to the other.
The honest version is that a teak deck does not simply wear out with age. It is spent — consumed slowly from the surface down, at a rate set long before anyone walks on it. Two decks laid in the same yard, in the same year, can be a decade apart in service life depending on decisions made before the first plank was cut.
The short answer, and why it is a range
As a working rule, a well-built and well-maintained solid teak deck of good thickness lasts 20 to 30 years, and exceptional cases reach 40. A thin or poorly specified deck — or one that is neglected or over-sanded — can be finished in 10 to 15. The figure is not driven by calendar age but by how much teak is left to give.
What actually determines a teak deck’s lifespan
Board thickness — the single biggest factor
A teak deck wears from the top down: weather, cleaning and the occasional sanding each remove a fraction of a millimetre. What you are spending is thickness. Superyacht decks are often laid at 12–14 mm; lighter production decks at 6–9 mm. A thicker deck can absorb one or two more sandings across its life, and each sanding is worth years. It is the factor most tempting to trim on cost, and the one that quietly borrows life from the future.
Timber grade and cut
Grade and cut decide how evenly that thickness is spent. First European Quality (FEQ), vertical-grain teak cut on the quarter is dimensionally stable: it wears flat and true and resists cupping, checking and lifting. A lower grade or a flat-sawn board moves with sun and moisture and opens at the seams early — ending the deck’s life for reasons unrelated to how much wood is left. Good timber laid thin can outlast poor timber laid thick.
Construction method
A modern bonded deck has no screws or plugs piercing the planks, so there are no plug holes to leak and no fastenings to corrode beneath the surface — and it can be laid thinner for the same working life. Older screwed-and-plugged decks fail most often at the plug: once one weeps, water reaches the fastening and the wood around it. On many older yachts the plugs, not the teak, are what end the deck.
Caulking, climate and care
The black seams are the deck’s seal; over years of sun the caulking hardens and can lift, letting water travel beneath the planks. Constant Mediterranean sun and salt, heavy charter traffic and permanent wet mooring all accelerate wear. But the biggest human factor is maintenance done wrong: hard scrubbing, aggressive cleaners and unnecessary sanding remove teak faster than the sea ever will.
Estimating the life left in an existing deck
Age alone tells you little. What matters is remaining thickness, the state of the seams and the condition of the wood. A twenty-year-old deck laid thick and cared for may have years left and need only fresh caulking; an eight-year-old deck of thin, poor timber may already be near its end. What this means for a new deck
Lifespan is bought at the specification stage, not later. Building for a long life means specifying adequate thickness, FEQ quarter-sawn teak, bonded construction and quality caulking from the outset.
